Why can children not use the BMI calculator for adults?

The BMI calculator for adults does not distinguish between age and gender, which are crucial parameters for growth assessment in children. In adulthood, only single limits for overweight (BMI 25) and obesity (BMI 30) are used. For childhood and adolescence, which are characterized by dynamic development, it is necessary to use percentile methods.

The thresholds for childhood obesity are lower than for adults, and therefore, if the child exceeds a BMI of 30, then it is almost certainly obese.

This BMI calculator provides initial information about the weight status of the child. In any case, it is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice. On the contrary, it is intended to bring the child for expert consultation if a deviation from the normal development of the child is detected. BMI is a parameter calculated from height and weight and only indirectly indicates the amount of fat in the body. More accurate assessment requires examination by a trained health professional.
